Communication between the French children and the American parents was always difficult at the beginning. The French children had been exposed to the English language for six months before going to America. But at the end of the three weeks it was much easier to communicate for the children had picked up enough English to get by. However the American children were more favored for many French families spoke enough English to speak to the from the very beginning. The American children had also the French lessons before leaving.

The only line of communication between the children and their families was through letter writing. No phone, no Internet, no E mail! The first letter was sent after the first night. Many were pathetic: homesickness was our problem N°1!

To prepare the children for the snow class experience, saturday morning sessions were organized: French classes, History of France, pratical information about France. The sessions lasted 3 hours and were mandatory for the children and their teacher.

The Saturday morning sessions also brought the children together, forming a very homogeneous  class: they were able to help each other when the going was tough in France: new food, sharin
g bedrooms, living together with the French children.

In 1978, the first snow class from the South side of Chicago participated. They were mixed with a group from Streamwood, North of the City and the white parents from Streamwood had a hard time accepting their children with black children. However in the chalet, kids were kids and the Americans children got together to face the French children. See book" The French-American snow class"
